Drew LaPlante & The Prosperity
Covington, KY • Rock/Acoustic/Pop
If you’re looking for mopey songs about how much the world sucks, don’t come knocking on Drew Laplante’s door. The Northeastern Ohio native and current Northern Ky. resident is committed to fighting cool-kid cynicism one sincere, optimistic song at a time. Laplante’s EP Believe shows off his acoustic stylings well, loaded with bubbling grooves and highlighted by his captivating voice, a raspy instrument that spreads like a cosmic glaze across each track.
Dig It: Jack Johnson with the flip-flops, surfer dudeness and summertime beach jams surgically removed and replaced by a Midwestern soulfulness and reflective riverbank autumn jams. (MB)
10 p.m. Thursday at FB’s
Pete Dressman & The 6 Five Shooters
Ft. Mitchell, KY • Blues/Rock
Singing his ass off locally for years, heavily gigging and scoring a dedicated following, throaty, charismatic vocalist Pete Dressman belts it out with an Eddie Vedderish drawl. In 2006, he was voted Favorite Solo Artist on Fox Network’s MyNetworkTV national competition, and he’s shared the stage with several national acts. Now a fresh four-piece, the Shooters’ bluesy Rock and stage presence attracts packed-in, drooling, front-row onlookers. Might see a few “weird, wild, drunken dancing fans” beam in from no man’s land.
Dig it: Pearl Jam’s ocean days, John Lee Hooker piggybacking Chad Kroeger. (CAM)
11 p.m. Thursday at FB’s
Kelly Fine
Cincinnati • Indie/Acoustic
Kelly Fine started out in that hotbed of Alternative musical endeavor, Dayton, Ohio, but has chosen to migrate south to the Queen City and we couldn’t be happier to have her here. Off-kilter Folk Pop with heart and soul and brains should have its own wing in a more musically inclusive Hall of Fame, and Kelly Fine should be its curator.
Dig it: Ingrid Michaelson gets her Masters in quirky Folk from Professor Ani Di Franco and Dr. Kate Bush, with a grant from the Wainwright Foundation. (BB)
